Alexander McQueen
Alexander McQueen started his career at a young age when he dropped out of school at age 16 and landed a tailoring apprenticeship on London's famous Savile Row. His learning experience was furthered at Angels and Bermans, the celebrated theatrical costumiers, who taught him the art of patternmaking. At Central Saint Martins, McQueen earned his Masters in 1994, and upon graduating had his entire degree collection bought by style icon Isabella Blow. McQueen quickly became known for his lavish, rebellious, and dramatic designs on the runways. His career took a turn in 1996, when the young designer succeeded John Galliano as head designer of Givenchy, and another in 2000 when the Gucci Group acquired 51% of his label. McQueen remains creative director there to this day.
McQueen's background of British tailoring and costume design and love of French Couture has always been apparent in his collections. Famous for pushing the envelope, the designer will choose an unusual inspiration such as scuba diving or insects and create a collection based on this theme. Despite the diversity of his collections, some elements are consistent such as structured jackets and frock coats, voluminous dresses, and geometric angles. Today, McQueen designs several lines including women's and men's ready-to-wear, shoes, accessories, eyewear, and fragrance. He also has created McQ, a more casual and affordable ready-to-wear line. Flagship stores have been opened in New York, London, and Milan. Alexander McQueen will certainly continue surprise and defy the fashion world with his raw energy and unconventional designs.
